Amateur radio class can make you a pro

Interested in science, or in finding new ways to communicate with people? The Michiana Amateur Radio Club has a program that allows people to earn an amateur radio license in a single day.
Barry Keating, a University of Notre Dame business professor and member of the MARC board
of directors, says an amateur radio license is a good way to teach young people the basics of
science and for adults to participate in a fun hobby. The license allows operators to do things such as communicate with the International Space Station, Keating said.
The Only One Day workshop will be held on Feb. 23 at the American Red Cross Building, 3220
E. Jefferson Blvd. Registration for the course is at 8:30 a.m. Students will spend the day learning about amateur radio, then at 4 p.m., they will take the license test. Participants will know if they passed before they leave. Keating said about 95 percent of people taking part in the session pass the test. There is a $25 fee, which covers the Federal Communications Commission testing fee.
