Former Qwest CEO Notebaert moves on

Former Qwest chairman and chief executive Dick Notebaert has lined up his first assignment since retiring last week — a speaking engagement at the University of Notre Dame.
Notebaert, who chairs the university’s board of trustees, will speak with students on Aug. 31 as part of the school’s Mendoza College of Business “Boardroom Insights” lecture series.
The series features “corporate leaders and senior executives sharing their perspectives on a broad range of critical issues in today’s business world,” said a release issued today by the university.
Other speakers in the series include Ted Dosch, chief financial officer of Whirlpool; Nick Shepherd, chief operating officer of Blockbuster; and Sam Duncan, CEO of OfficeMax.
Notebaert took the reins at Denver-based Qwest in June 2002 and helped save the company from nearbankruptcy. Qwest has achieved sustained profitability, but questions remain about the company’s ability to compete against growing competition from cable firms.
Notebaert was succeeded by telecom veteran Ed Mueller.
