Liautaud opened Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches on Jan. 13, 1983, in Charleston, Ill., with $25,000 from his father for startup capital. He learned about food vending by scouting hot dog stands and other eateries in Chicago, eventually creating his business plan to sell sandwiches made of premium meats and a bread recipe he baked himself. He franchised the sandwich chain in 1994, and today has more than 1,400 corporate and franchised locations in 42 states.
