Junior Edwina King selected for Gilman Scholarship to study abroad

University of Notre Dame student Edwina King, a junior accountancy major with a supplementary major in Spanish, has been selected for the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship on the early summer application cycle.
Sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, the Gilman Scholarship provides financial support for American undergraduate students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad.
Scholars receive as much as $5,000 for program costs, with additional funding available for the study of a critical foreign language overseas.
King, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, will study in Europe through Notre Dame International’s summer program in Toledo, Spain.
“Edwina is someone who steps up to challenges and seeks out opportunities for growth, making her an excellent selection for the Gilman Scholarship,” said Erik Beardsley, assistant professor in the Department of Accountancy. “I am confident she will take advantage of the many social and cultural opportunities her study abroad experience will provide.”
The Flatley Center for Undergraduate Scholarly Engagement assisted King with the application process. The center promotes the intellectual development of Notre Dame undergraduates through scholarly engagement, research, creative endeavors and the pursuit of fellowships.
A former congressman from New York, the late Benjamin A. Gilman served in the U.S. House of Representatives for 30 years and chaired the House Foreign Relations Committee.
Upon receiving the Secretary of State’s Distinguished Service Medal in 2002, he commented, “Living and learning in a vastly different environment of another nation not only exposes our students to alternate views, but adds enriching social and cultural experiences. It also provides our students with the opportunity to return home with a deeper understanding of their place in the world, encouraging them to be a contributor rather than a spectator in the international community.”
