Milani recognized by governor for volunteerism

Accountancy Professor Ken Milani was a 2008 nominee for the Governor’s Awards for Volunteer Service, Indiana’s most prestigious recognition of volunteerism. Milani was nominated by the Internal Revenue Service office in Indianapolis for his long-time efforts with the Tax Assistance Program (TAP), an income tax preparation service that has provided free help for area low-income residents for 37 years.

“I consider it a privilege to coordinate the efforts of Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s students to meet this need in their collegiate home town,” said Milani.

In his role as TAP director, Milani oversees more than 90 student volunteers, as well as several local accountants, who staff 11 area service centers. Volunteers also form “SWAT” teams to serve disabled taxpayers in their homes and hospital rooms. In 2007 alone, the group filed more than 3,600 income tax returns.

Milani received recognition for “Community Volunteerism,” one of six categories of Governor’s Awards that recognizes a group or individual that has made a significant impact on the community through volunteer efforts. The award in this category was given to Dr. Rajih Haddawi, a retired orthopedic hand surgeon from Bloomington, during the 5 th Annual Governor’s Conference on Service and Volunteerism in Indianapolis on March 25.

“This year, we received a record number of nominations from all across the state. The caliber of nominees was extremely high, making the decision of the selection committee incredibly difficult,” according to a statement by the Indiana Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives, which sponsors the awards.
