Biography

Tonia Murphy obtained her undergraduate degree in English from Notre Dame and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Michigan. After practicing law with a large law firm in Indianapolis and working as an in-house lawyer at Eli Lilly and Company, Murphy joined the faculty at Notre Dame in 1992. She teaches the introductory Business Law course and a graduate course in Law for the Science/Engineering Entrepreneur. She serves as pre-law advisor for the College. Professor Murphy is a former Editor in Chief of the Journal of Legal Studies Education and a Staff Editor of the American Business Law Journal. She has published articles on electronic discovery, contract law, ethics, and pedagogy in legal studies courses. Murphy has earned national recognition for teaching and research. Most recently, her article on covenants not to compete received the Hoeber Award for the best article in Volume 32 of the Journal of Legal Studies Education. Murphy is a member (inactive) of the Indiana Bar.
