Jim Otteson is widely recognized as a leading philosopher in business ethics and political economy. His scholarship examines the moral foundations of markets and the role business plays in a just and humane society. In particular, he is internationally known for his work on Adam Smith, bringing fresh insight to Smith’s understanding of moral agency, cooperation and human flourishing. Jim’s writing has helped shape contemporary conversations about how markets function and what ethical obligations individuals and institutions bear within them.
The University Chair Lecture provides an opportunity for our community to hear from a scholar whose work exemplifies Mendoza’s distinctive mission — rigorous in thought, engaged with real-world challenges and rooted in enduring questions about human flourishing. I hope you will join us for what promises to be a thoughtful and stimulating presentation.
