Three MBA candidates from the Mendoza College of Business were part of teams winning the top three places in the Kenan-Flagler Marketing Case Competition hosted by the University of North Carolina on Feb. 1-2, 2008.

Team Stove Top, which included 2009 MBA candidate Karen Frevert, took first place honors in this ninth annual competition. Joe Kindt and Mike Bott, also 2009 candidates, were on second- and third-place teams, respectively.

The Kenan-Flagler competition differs from the usual format of other case competitions, in that students build teams with representatives from other MBA programs. The competition involved a case from lead sponsor Kraft Foods that dealt with a product facing the issue of low market share. The participants were asked what they would do if they were the brand manager in order to increase market share. The format of the competition means that in addition to arriving at a solution, the teams must also quickly demonstrate leadership and teamwork, according to the organizers.

Twelve teams of four first-year MBA students participated in the competition, which included 11 students from Notre Dame. Thirteen top business schools were represented, including MIT, UC Berkeley, Georgetown and Duke.
