Testing the waters: How a team of MBA students put their business skills to work in Puerto Rico

The five Notre Dame MBA students faced a task that wasn’t for the fainthearted: Drink a glass of water that 30 seconds before was a disgusting mixture of ditch water, dirt, rocks and even cigarette butts. This wasn’t some team-building version of Truth or Dare, but a real-life demonstration of the water filtration system that the students — all military veterans — shortly would be distributing to rural residents of Puerto Rico who were still struggling with the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.

As consumers cut cable TV cords and increasing rely on digital platforms for entertainment, information, purchasing and a range of other services, another trend is rapidly taking shape: Digital media is accounting for an increasing share of total advertising. To address this trend, Mendoza's Marketing Department is adding digital media coursework to its undergraduate and graduate offerings, and bringing Tim Bohling, a digital media specialist, on board to advise and teach.

The University of Notre Dame Institute for Global Investing (NDIGI) has named Erin Bellissimo as managing director, effective Sept. 1.

Bellissimo will be responsible for setting the strategic priorities of the Institute and managing its operations, including developing and directing curriculum and programs, mentoring students, supporting faculty research, and building and facilitating relationships among the Institute’s key constituents.  She will work in collaboration with the NDIGI’s faculty director, finance professor Shane Corwin

The University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business recently announced its annual list of Office of the Dean Mission Awards, which honor one or more faculty members for a specific research study that contributes to the common good.

The award is in recognition of Mendoza’s mission "to build a premier Catholic business school that fosters academic excellence, professional effectiveness and personal accountability in a context that strives to be faithful to the ideals of community, human development and individual integrity."  A committee made up of the chairs from each of the College’s five academic departments — Accountancy; Finance; IT, Analytics, and Operations; Management & Organization; and Marketing — along with the associate dean for faculty and research, select research papers that advance the mission. Each award provides $1,000 in cash.

Shankar Ganesan, professor and chair of the Marketing Department, won the prestigious Louis W. Stern Award, which recognizes an outstanding article published in a refereed journal that has made a significant contribution to the literature on marketing and channels of distribution.

A team of University of Notre Dame MBA students took first place in the 2018 Illinois MBA Strategy Case Competition, besting 15 other business schools. The event, now in its 10th year, took place Feb. 8-10 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Kristen Collett-Schmitt, an assistant teaching professor in the Department of Finance, was featured in the University of Notre Dame's Women Lead feature for International Women's Day.

“I’ve had three defining experiences in my life,” says Collett-Schmitt. “Growing up, I was very fortunate. Everything seemed to always work out. But it was those three moments when things didn’t work out, where I realized I had to make a choice — to just give up, or make something happen.”
