In USA, new pope greeted warmly, with great hope

For Catholics in the USA, the first pope from the Americas brings both tears and hope for new ideas.

The selection of Argentine Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio as the new leader of the world’s 1.2 billion Catholics was greeted with enthusiasm among American disciples.

The new pope — the first from the Americas — appeared on the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica within an hour after white smoke at the Vatican signaled the selection of a new pontiff following the February resignation of Pope Benedict XVI.

James O’Rourke, a management professor at the University of Notre Dame, a Roman Catholic school in South Bend, Ind., said the new pope has his work cut out for him.

Bergoglio needs a strategic vision, team-building and financial skills and what O’Rourke called “charismatic empathy.” The new pope, he said, “will face perhaps more challenges than any previous pope since the Reformation.”
