Pulitzer-Prize-winning New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman will headline the signature event of the 2010-11 Notre Dame Forum on Nov. 3 (Wednesday) at the University of Notre Dame.

Friedman’s talk, which will begin at 7 p.m. in the Leighton Concert Hall of the University’s DeBartolo Performing Arts Center, will be moderated by Andrea Mitchell, chief foreign affairs correspondent for NBC News and host of MSNBC’s “Andrea Mitchell Reports.”

The presentation, which is open to Notre Dame students, faculty and staff, is the signature event of the Forum, “The Global Marketplace and the Common Good,” a yearlong discussion of morals in the rebuilding and reshaping of the global economy. Following his remarks, Friedman will join a roundtable discussion featuring Carolyn Y. Woo, Martin J. Gillen Dean of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business; Gary Anderson, professor of theology; and Notre Dame student Shanna Gast. A series of student discussions also will take place in residence halls the following day.

Admission is free, but tickets are required and will be available on a limited basis beginning Oct. 27 (Wednesday) from noon to 6 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center ticket office. A Notre Dame ID card is required and there is a limit of two tickets per ID and one ID per person.

One of the nation’s most influential commentators, Friedman has examined a wide range of topics, including globalization and worldwide economic issues, religious fundamentalism and terrorism, and the Middle East conflict. He has won three Pulitzer Prizes and has had four best-selling books, most recently “The World is Flat,” a current best-seller.

A veteran journalist, Mitchell joined NBC News in 1978 and currently covers foreign policy, intelligence and national security issues, including the diplomacy of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, for all network properties. The author of “Talking Back,” a memoir about her experiences as one of the first women to cover five presidents, congress and foreign policy, she covered the entire 2008 presidential campaign, broadcasting live from every major primary and caucus states and all the candidate debates for NBC News and MSNBC.
