Dr. Heng Xu is a Professor of Information Technology, Analytics, and Operations at the Mendoza College of Business, University of Notre Dame. She currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of the ACM Transactions on Management Information Systems. Her research focuses on data privacy, digital ethics, and fairness in machine learning, with interdisciplinary work published across information systems, computer science, law, and psychology.
She has received numerous prestigious awards for her scholarly contributions across multiple fields. These include the Jeanneret Award for Excellence in the Study of Individual or Group Assessment (Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology), the Social Justice Best Paper Award (INFORMS Information Systems Society), the Davis-Dickson Impact Award (MIS Quarterly), the Stafford Beer Medal (Operational Research Society), and the NSF CAREER Award (National Science Foundation), among others.
She is passionate about advancing responsible AI and privacy-preserving technologies, and deeply committed to mentoring the next generation of scholars. Prior to joining Notre Dame, she held faculty appointments at Penn State, American University, and the University of Florida, and served as a Program Director at the National Science Foundation.
Dr. Xu has also contributed to several national leadership initiatives, including serving on the National Academies' Board on Human-Systems Integration (2024-present), co-chairing the Federal Privacy R&D Interagency Working Group (2016), and participating in the National Privacy Research Strategy Working Group (2014-2016).
