Tonia Murphy obtained her undergraduate degree in English from Notre Dame and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Michigan. Before joining the faculty, she practiced law with a large law firm in Indianapolis and worked as an in-house lawyer at Eli Lilly and Company. She teaches the introductory Business Law course and serves as pre-law advisor for the College.

Professor Murphy is a former Editor in Chief of the Journal of Legal Studies Education and served ten years as a Staff Editor of the American Business Law Journal. Her recent research concerns free speech, contract law, and pedagogy in legal studies courses. Murphy has earned national recognition for teaching and research, including the Charles M. Hewitt Master Teacher Award from the Academy of Legal Studies in Business and four Hoeber Memorial Awards for Best Article in the Journal of Legal Studies Education. Murphy is a member (inactive in good standing) of the Indiana Bar.
