Ahmed Abbasi, the Joe and Jane Giovanini Professor of IT, Analytics and Operations at the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business, was recognized as a member of the Notre Dame All-Faculty Team during halftime of the Notre Dame football game against Boise State on October 4.

The All-Faculty Team honors distinguished faculty members from across the University who have made transformative contributions to Notre Dame and to their academic fields. At each home football game, one member of the team is recognized on the field during halftime.

Abbasi, who serves as co-director of the Human-centered Analytics Lab and director of the Ph.D. in Analytics program at Mendoza, conducts research in text and predictive analytics. In accepting the recognition, he emphasized the importance of bridging research and practice — what he calls the “last research mile.”

“The ‘last research mile’ relates to the challenges of moving research from theory to practice—from the lab to the field, from academic rigor to real-world relevance,” Abbasi said. “This is what brought me to Notre Dame some years ago.”

Abbasi has published more than 100 articles in academic journals and conferences, including several in top-tier outlets such as MIS Quarterly, Information Systems Research, Journal of MIS, ACM Transactions on Information Systems and IEEE Intelligent Systems.

His research has earned best paper awards from AIS, INFORMS, MISQ, ISR and WITS, and he was a finalist for the American Marketing Association’s Shelby D. Hunt/Harold H. Maynard Award. His work has also been supported by more than a dozen grants from the National Science Foundation and industry partners including AWS, Microsoft, eBay, Deloitte and Oracle.

In recognition of his research contributions, Abbasi has received numerous honors, including the IEEE Technical Achievement Award, INFORMS Design Science Award, IBM Faculty Award and the Kemper Professor Award.

Abbasi earned his Ph.D. in Information Systems from the University of Arizona’s Artificial Intelligence Lab, a master’s degree in Operations Research from Columbia University and MBA and bachelor’s degrees from Virginia Tech.
