SOUTH BEND — The Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre Dame is sponsoring its 10th annual Ethics Week — five days of speakers and discussions on business ethics.

The week is always timed to coincide with Valentine’s Day.

“On Valentine’s Day, you get real explicit about sending someone you love a message,” said Ken Milani, a Notre Dame professor of accountancy and faculty coordinator of Ethics Week. “During ethics week, we get real explicit about ethics.”

That’s explicit as in detailed, not as in rap lyrics.

Ethics Week events are designed to get people thinking about the more detailed ethical decisions they have to make every day.For example, when money’s tight and tough decisions about personnel or spending have to be made, how do you do that with humanity?

How much business students know about that is largely a matter of who you’re talking to, said Milani, also a Tribune columnist.

“If you’re looking at sophomores and juniors, there’s not much there at all,” he said. “If you look at master’s students, and some who have more work experience, they bring a lot to the table.”

The schedule of speakers, all of whose events are open to the public, is as follows:

Monday: “Peace Through Commerce,” by Carolyn Woo, dean of the Mendoza College of
Business. 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Tuesday: “Ethics and Executive Education: Examining the Essential Elements,” by Joe Holt, director of Executive Education Programming at Notre Dame. 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

Wednesday: “Teaching Business Ethics in International Courses,” by professor Monle Lee of Indiana University South Bend, and professor Jack Ruhe of Saint Mary’s College. Noon to 1 p.m.

Thursday: “True to Yourself,” by Mark Albion, former professor, New York Times bestselling
author and the co-founder of Net Impact. Noon to 1 p.m.

All events are held in the Giovanini Commons at Mendoza College of Business on Notre
Dame’s campus. Admission is free.
