Scott Nestler was a guest on a sports analytics podcast hosted by the Great Lakes Analytics in Sports Conference. Nestler, an associate teaching professor in the Information Technology, Analytics, and Operations Department at Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business, discussed his work with the Notre Dame Sports Analytics Club and his talk “Analysis of Potential NCAA Basketball Rule Changes,” which he will give at the Great Lakes Analytics in Sports Conference on June 21 at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Noting that the NCAA has used the National Invitation Tournament as a test bed for potential rule changes in the past, Nestler looked at the effect of four NIT rule changes in comparison with regular season and other postseason games. It allows us to compare… what effects did these rule changes have that we didn’t see in the NCAA, the higher-level tournament, or the two lower-level tournaments. So it’s kind of an interesting experimental design from that perspective.
