The relationship between Notre Dame and the U.S. Military is deeply rooted in tradition, honor and respect. The bond formed more than 150 years ago, when Holy Cross priests and nuns served as chaplains and nurses in the Civil War. Since then, the two institutions have shared many watershed moments and milestones — during times of war and in times of peace. Here is a timeline noting some of the most significant dates in Notre Dame’s military history.
