Fighting Irish Capital
Fighting Irish Capital is a student-led group whose purpose is to introduce Master of Science in Finance (MSF) students to the fundamentals of value investing and portfolio management. Fighting Irish Capital offers a unique opportunity for student involvement and experiential learning. The club manages a $480,000+ portfolio of long equity positions as a portion of the university endowment. It also hosts regular workshops covering various topics critical to investing, from overviews of the investment management industry to various valuation techniques. This unparalleled opportunity allows club members to simulate the investment decisions made by portfolio managers through critical evaluation of stock pitches. Since 1988, the fund has earned an average annual return of 8.6%.
Fighting Irish Capital had its foundations in a 1965 donation to the University by Herman Crown. Crown’s gift was to be managed by Notre Dame graduate students as an opportunity for students interested in the securities markets to learn through practical experience. The fund had a balance of $7,840 on June 30, 1973. In June 2021, the Mendoza College of Business matriculated its first cohort of MSF students to a new program taught at the main campus in Notre Dame, Indiana. The MSF Class of 2023 reinvigorated the management of the fund and launched Fighting Irish Capital as we know it today.
Fighting Irish Capital seeks to introduce MSF students to careers and concepts in investing. Through our workshops and stock pitches, we hope students can learn to evaluate investments and thoughtfully convey their ideas. Our end goal is to teach club members to think like investors.
