Notre Dame team finish in xTax top 5

For the third consecutive year, a team of students from the University of Notre Dame was selected as one of the top five finalists in the annual PricewaterhouseCoopers xTax competition. Team members included senior Christopher Mueller, juniors James Duffy and John Dalhoff, and sophomores Catherine Bowers and Anne Greteman. Accountancy Professor Jim Seida served as the team’s advisor.

The top five teams traveled to Washington, D.C., to compete in the “Extreme Accounting” finals on Jan. 24-25, 2008, which culminated weeks of competition among 273 teams from 39 colleges and universities across the country. More than 1,300 students participated in the program.

The competition is designed to give undergraduate business students exposure to accounting and auditing issues that they will encounter in the real world. The teams are given two weeks to research an assigned question about an important tax issue, which is generally one that they have not encountered before, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers. Judges consider critical thinking, presentation quality and teamwork in order to decide a winner. Each of the five final teams is awarded $10,000.

The 2007 xTax overall winner was Arizona State University. Other finalists in addition to Notre Dame included Baylor, Michigan State and Binghamton University (State University of New York).
