Privacy and data security: What will the next decade hold?

Ten Years Hence, an annual speaker series hosted by the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business, will focus on an increasingly complicated and problematic part of daily life: data security.

The 2020 series features a wide range of top scholars, company leaders and experts in data and cyber security from Google, KPMG, Notre Dame, the University of California-Berkeley and other organizations that will present topics ranging from privacy concerns to surveillance systems to trends in communications technology.

The Ten Years Hence speaker series explores issues, ideas and trends likely to affect business and society over the next decade. Students, faculty and the community use guest speaker comments as a springboard for structured speculation about emerging issues.

The talks, which are free and open to the public, take place from 10:40 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. on select Fridays throughout the spring semester in the Andrews Auditorium in Geddes Hall. The full schedule with the titles of the presentations is as follows:

• Jan. 17: James Lai and Nicholas Schmidt, cyber security advisers for KPMG; “Basics of Privacy.”
• Feb. 21: John Verdi, vice president of the Future of Privacy Forum; “The Future of Privacy Law, Norms, Code, and Markets.”
• Feb. 28: Andrew Borene, CEO of Cipherloc Corporation; “Control Freak: Maintaining Privacy and security in the Quantum Era.”
• March 20: Kevin Bowyer, professor of computer engineering at Notre Dame; “Current Controversies in Face Recognition and Privacy.”
• March 27: Michel Laguerre, professor of global metropolitan studies at University of California, Berkeley and director of the Berkeley Center of Globalization and Information Technology; “Digital-Surveillance Ecosystem of the Neighborhood Supermarket.”
• April 3: Corey duBrowa, vice president of communications and public affairs for Google; “The Future of Technology and Innovation in Communications.”
• April 17: Lisa Sotto, partner and chair of global privacy and cybersecurity practice for Hunton, Andrews, Kurth; “Privacy and Cybersecurity: The New Frontier.”
• April 24: Mark McKenna, professor of law at Notre Dame; “Privacy in the Era of Surveillance Capitalism.”
