Notre Dame Ethics Week 2012: Failed v. ‘Fantastic’ Financial Institutions

Published: February 10, 2012 / Author: Carol Elliott

The financial crisis of the past several years put a
public spotlight on how much the financial services industry has evolved, from
its savings-and-loan roots, to its expansion into a complex, global network of
financial institutions offering a myriad of products.

The crisis also highlighted the disastrous economic
fallout when these institutions fail, sometimes due to a lack of ethical
decision making.

An examination of the financial services industry and its
role in the financial crisis is the subject of Notre Dame Ethics Week 2012, a
series of lectures by financial experts sponsored by the Mendoza College of
Business at the University of Notre Dame. The talks, which are free and open to
the public, take place 12:30-1:30 p.m. on Feb. 13-16 in the Giovanini Commons
located in the Mendoza College’s lower level.

Ethics Week speakers will discuss, “Financial
Institutions: Fantastic Ones and Failed Ones,” with topics ranging from the
role of ethics in the financial services industry to the risk factors
associated with large firms.

The schedule is as follows:

·
Feb. 13: “Too Big to Exist?” by Tom Cosimano, finance
professor and banking expert, University of Notre Dame

·
Feb. 14: “Success or Worth: What is True Net
Worth?” by Randall Raciti, principal and financial advisor, The Healy Group,
South Bend, Ind.

·
Feb. 15: “Ethics in the Financial Market place,”
by Chris Murphy, chairman, 1st Source Bank, South Bend, Ind.

·
Feb. 16: “Financial Services: The Broken
Promises,” by Tim Hart, president, Credibility Consulting, Washington, D.C.

Sponsored by Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business,
Ethics Week was established to encourage the discussion of ethical matters in
undergraduate and graduate business classes at Notre Dame and to secure a
foundation for future discussions inside and outside the classroom.
