In memoriam: Salvatore J. Bella, professor emeritus of management

Salvatore J. Bella, professor emeritus of management at the University of Notre Dame, died Tuesday (April 9) in the Sanctuary at St. Paul’s. He was 93.

A native of Lawrence, Mass., Bella was graduated from Boston University and earned a a master’s degree in economics from there before earning a doctoral degree in labor and industrial relations from Cornell University.

Bella joined the Notre Dame business faculty in 1958 and spent his entire teaching career at the University, teaching popular undergraduate and graduate management courses until his retirement in 1990. He also provided consulting services for numerous companies including Whirlpool, NARDA, University of California at Los Angeles, and Bendix Corporation.

Bella was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Dantina Carmen Quartaroli, to whom he was married for 59 years. He is survived by his three children, Theresa Maria, Joseph Salvatore and Jennifer Marie and their spouses; his three grandchildren, Salvatore Joseph Bella and Jesse Bella, both of Chicago, and Veronica Danté Scharton of Center Conway, N.H.; and his beloved cat, Shaver.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 am Monday (April 15) in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. Graveside services and burial will follow in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
