Notre Dame b-school names finance professor as associate dean

The Mendoza College of Business at the University of Notre
Dame has named a new associate dean to head its graduate studies.

Jeffrey H.
Bergstrand, a finance professor at Mendoza for more than 26 years, will
take over as associate dean of graduate studies beginning July 1, 2013. Responsibilities
will include acting as the curriculum director for the graduate programs at the
Mendoza College; most notably, Bergstrand will guide academic strategy for the Notre Dame MBA, which ranked
No. 20 in the most recent Bloomberg Businessweek survey of the best
graduate business schools. 

“Jeff has extensive experience in both teaching our graduate
students, and in macroeconomics,” said Roger Huang,
Kenneth R. Meyer Professor of Global Investment Management and the Interim Dean
for the Mendoza College. “His strong expertise in global economics and
multinational corporations will be a valuable asset in guiding the future
direction of our graduate programs.”

Bergstrand has taught in the Notre Dame MBA and Executive
MBA programs throughout his tenure, as well as in undergraduate courses. He is
a prolific researcher in the areas of international trade, foreign direct
investment and free trade agreements, and is frequently quoted in the media on
topics including the European Union and foreign currency. Bergstrand has been a
visiting scholar at the European Commission in Brussels, the IFO
Institute/University of Munich, ETH University in Zurich, and several other
institutions. He has also advised the European Commission on the effects of
EU-U.S. nontariff barriers and of EU free trade agreements on their trade
flows.

In addition, Bergstrand is a fellow of Notre Dame’s Kellogg
Institute for International Studies, and a research associate of CESifo, an
international network of researchers based in Europe.  He earned his bachelor’s degree in economics
and political science from Northwestern University, and his master’s and
doctoral degrees in economics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Edward J. Conlon, Edward Frederick Sorin Society Professor
of Management and current associate dean of graduate studies, ends his term June
30, 2013. Conlon served as associate dean for nearly 10 years.
