In July 2010, University of Notre Dame business school dean Carolyn Y. Woo traveled to Shanghai to address deans of Chinese b-schools about integrating ethics and corporate social responsibility into their curricula.
This spring, Woo is leading a group of alumni, faculty and others back to China for a tour that combines corporate visits with cultural experiences for a first-hand view of how the country is balancing explosive economic growth with its rich and ancient heritage.
The 10-day trip from May 24 – June 2 includes visits to Beijing, Guilin and Shanghai.
“From news reports, you can get a sense of China as a financial case study, given its rapid development in the last five years,” said Woo, the Martin J. Gillen dean of the Mendoza College of Business. “But as a native of Hong Kong, my hope is to provide those who accompany me on the tour with a deeper understanding of the scope of its change, its heritage and its challenges.”
Some of the highlights include Beijing stops at Tian’anmen Square, the Forbidden City, and Qianmen Street, the city’s best-known commercial street. In Guilin, which was settled in about 300 B.C., travelers will have the opportunity for a day-trip to Xiaozhai Village to learn local culture of Yao Minority people. The itinerary also features a number of corporate visits and a stop at the Shanghai World Financial Center.
