Notre Dame MBA recognized as ‘military friendly’ school

The University of Notre Dame’s MBA program at the Mendoza College of Business has been recognized as a “2011 Military Friendly School,” an honor awarded to the top 15 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools. G.I. Jobs compiles the annual list of schools, which range from state universities and private colleges to community colleges and trade schools that “are doing the most to embrace America’s veterans as students.”
The military values of integrity, leadership, excellence and community are perfectly aligned with the values espoused by our MBA student body,” said Edward J. Conlon, associate dean for Graduate Studies of the Mendoza College of Business. “The Notre Dame program provides an excellent fit and a great opportunity for current and former members of the military services, and we are deeply honored to be described as ‘military friendly.’”
The entire list of Military Friendly Schools is available online at militaryfriendlyschools.com/2011list. Criteria for making the list included efforts to recruit and retain military and veteran students, results in recruiting military and veteran students and academic accreditations. Schools on the Military Friendly Schools list also offer additional benefits to student veterans such as on-campus veterans programs, credit for service, military spouse programs and more.
“This list is especially important now because the post-9/11 GI Bill® has given veterans virtually unlimited financial means to go to school,” said Rich McCormack, G.I. Jobs publisher. “Veterans can now enroll in any school, provided they’re academically qualified. So schools are clamoring for them like never before. Veterans need a trusted friend to help them decide where to get educated. The Military Friendly Schools list is that trusted friend.”
G.I. Jobs polled more than 7,000 schools nationwide to compile the list, which will be highlighted in the annual Guide to Military Friendly Schools distributed to thousands of active and former military personnel in late September. Methodology, criteria and weighting for the list were developed with the assistance of an Academic Advisory Board (AAB) consisting of educators from a number of universities and training schools, as well as directors of agencies associated with military and educational programs, such as Keith Wilson, Veteran Affairs’ director of education. Notre Dame has a long history of supporting the United States Armed Forces, dating back as far as 1858 with the Notre Dame Continental Cadets, a company composed of Notre Dame students. In September 1941, three months prior to the bombing of Pearl Harbor, the Naval Reserve Officers’ Training Corps became the University’s first ROTC detachment. An estimated 12,000 officers completed their training at Notre Dame between 1942 and 1946.
The University participates in the new GI Bill® known as the Yellow Ribbon Program. The legislation enacted by Congress authorized significant benefits to eligible U.S. military veterans with honorable discharges who served on active duty after Sept. 11, 2001, for at least 36 months.
“The life experiences and responsibilities that our former military MBAs bring to the classroom are truly extraordinary,” said Brian T. Lohr, director of Notre Dame MBA Admissions. “We’ve had platoon commanders who led troops in Iraq and Afghanistan, Army Rangers, even a husband-and-wife team who were both helicopter pilots in Iraq. Their experiences also make these students into prime targets for companies seeking graduates who not only have a first-class education and skill set, but also the judgment that allows them to be extremely effective problem solvers.”
The Notre Dame MBA at the Mendoza College of Business enrolls approximately 340 students annually in its one-year and two-year programs. The program is designed to sharpen students’ analytical and problem-solving skills, enhance their leadership ability and increase emphasis on ethical decision making. Students have the opportunity to study the complexities of global business through international immersions in Asia, Latin America and other locations. The Notre Dame MBA is ranked 20th among U.S. business schools by BusinessWeek, and No. 5 in the Aspen Institute’s 2009-10 Beyond Grey Pinstripes, a biennial survey and alternate ranking that indicates the school’s success in integrating social, environmental and ethical issues into its program.
G.I. Jobs is published by Victory Media, a veteran-owned business that also publishes The Guide to Military Friendly Schools, Military Spouse and Vetrepreneur magazines and annually rates the nation’s “Military Friendly Employers,” “Military Spouse Friendly Employers” and “Best Corporations for Veteran-Owned Businesses.”
