The ND Tax Assistance Program (TAP), directed by Professor Ken Milani was recognized as the recipient of the Presidential Team Irish Award on Saturday Sept 27th during the first period of the Irish football game against Purdue. TAP is underwritten by an endowment which honors Vivian Harrington Gray who volunteered as a tax preparer. Joining Ken on the field will be alumni—Matt Barrett, Ray Dalton; faculty and staff—Tom Bullock, Prof. Ed Hums, Dena DeLaurentis, Prof. Ken Milani, Prof. Jamie O’Brien and Prof. Jim Wittenbach , and students—Will Coburn, Kevin Manning, Kathleen Martinez and Peter McCormick.
The TAP program oversees more than 90 student volunteers as well as several local accountants who staff 11 area service centers. Volunteers also form “SWAT” teams to serve disabled taxpayers in their homes and hospital rooms. In 2008, the TAP personnel filed more than 3,700 income tax returns. TAP has also become a program at over 20 Notre Dame alumni clubs.
The TAP team has helped many taxpayers and provided opportunities for students to hone their skills, lend their service and develop a deeper understanding for the lives of their clients.
