The news of Steve Jobs‘ resignation from the CEO post, while not surprising because of his long-running battle with pancreatic cancer, cast a pall over Apple’s headquarters in nearby Cupertino, Calif., and prompted tech executives everywhere to ponder Job’s standing in the pantheon of American business legends. (Jobs remains chairman.)

“Steve Jobs is the most successful CEO in the U.S. of the last 25 years,” Google Chairman Eric Schmidt, who served on Apple’s board, said in a blog post.

Many have compared his influence to that of auto magnate Henry Ford and Walt Disney— whom Jobs openly admires.
